More than a country hotel. More than a comforable bed , an extraordinary meal, or a superb drink. The 'Gris' is what Essex is all about. It embodies a spirit understood perhaps only as one warms up to its pot belly stove or is hypnotized by the magic of a crackling log in one of its many fireplaces. It is a kaleidoscope of nostalgic images: A lovely country place. A myraid of Currier-and-Ives steamboat prints. A Taproom described by Lucius Beebe as preobably the most handsome barroom in America. A library of firearms dating from the 15th century. A group of charming dining rooms: The 'Covered Bridge', the 'Steamboat', the 'Library', and the 'Gun Room' from which marvelous aromas and smiling faces flow. A historic collection of Antonio Jacobsen marine art. A gentle smile and a helping hand from a waitress. An affable bartender: A cusine unmatched for its genuiness and purity.

We have been famous since 1776 for our food. Our fare is typically country. Everything is genuine and fresh, most of which is delivered daily from the sea. We have no pretenses; we call fish fish, and beef beef. No tenderizers, no chemicals, just the real thing. Irrespective of our New England chauvinism, however, we recognize and complement California wines with those of France, Germany and Italy; domestic beers and ales with the finest draft of England and Holland; and Tampa cigars with those of the Canary Islands and Jamaica.

So as to never disappoint you, we are open every day of the year (with the exception of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) for luncheon and dinner and a famous Hunt Breakfast on Sundays. We recommend reservations for all meals.
